Topco and Standard Bank host the 14th Annual Standard Bank Top Women Awards
A particular annual collaboration between one of SA’s leading banks, and a media agency based in CapeTown, brought about what could be one of the biggest events in the business space this year. Topco Media and leading partners Standard Bank hosted the 14th annual Standard Bank Top Women Conference and Awards on 17 August at Emperors Palace. The event “honors and applauds the outstanding leadership, vision and innovation of organisations that play a role in advancing women in the fore of the economy”.

The Standard Bank Top Women Conference took was hosted on 16 and 17 August and was attended by women from various industries who believe in the vision and values of the organisers. Guest speakers included Geraldine Fraser Moleketi, Kate Moodley, Pilisiwe Twala-Tau, Phuti Mahanyele, and other inspiring women who took to the stage, addressing a range of topics. They shedded light on pressing issues facing women in business and in the workplace today. Delegates enjoyed the motivating presentations and and embraced the networking opportunities.
The Big Night
This year’s 14th annual awards ceremony was introduced on the evening of 17 August by CEO of Topco Media, Ralf Fletcher. Presentations included 15 organisation category and 12 individual awards. Some of the awards in the organisation category included the Fast Growth Women-Owned SMME Award, Corporate Citizen Award, ICT Award and Female Public Sector Leader Award. Some of the individual awards included The Top Male Driving Gender Empowerment, Female Entrepreneur of 2017, Top Business Women of the Year, and the Top Young Achiever of the Year.
Judges and Highlight of the Evening
The winners of the various categories were selected by a panel of judges with outstanding profiles in business – esteemed men and women from different industries, including the likes of Margaret Sibiya, CEO of ICT Works; Kate Moodley, franchise director at Discovery; Buyani Zwane, CEO of Breakthrough Development; and Lebo Madiba, managing director of PR Powerhouse.
Standard Bank Salutes Women Achievers
The highlight of the evening was the final award, to a woman who has won the hearts of South Africans. The Princess of Africa, better known as Yvonne Chakachaka, humbly received the Standard Bank Top Women Life Time Achiever Award. In an interview with Thriving TV, Yvonne encouraged young entrepreneurs and shared a message to all women. “Make sure you get what you want. When one door shuts make sure you knock on another door and it will open. I want to urge the government to level the playing field for these young entrepreneurs because you are the generation that aren’t supposed to be working but creating jobs. Be a women. Work very effectively and by the way – women are well organised men!”
