The intimate launch of South Africa’s instalment of Social Media Week (SMW) took place in Midrand on 28 September 2018. With Dragon’s Den investor and founder of the Gem Group Lebo Gunguluza as the MC and program director, the launch was set to be one filled with laughs and inspiration.
Social media week, which takes place in more than 25 cities across the world, is best described as one of the world’s premier conferences and industry news platforms for professionals in media, marketing and technology. It seeks to give professionals at the intersection of media, marketing and technology the insights, ideas and opportunities they need to advance themselves and their organizations in a globally connected world.
To begin with, the director of Social Media Week Durban, Loraine Sibanda, explained that South Africa was deeply in need of an event like SMW. Our lives have begun to revolve around social media, and as a country that is largely connected by social media platforms, we are in a good position to benefit from such an event. Well-known industry players are expected to be present at the event. With Durban being one of the biggest and ultimate tourist destinations, SMW Durban will provide the ultimate getaway business and networking opportunity for all guests that will be attending.
The launch of Social Media Week – Durban also brings a series of workshop master classes, providing more in-depth knowledge and practical insights into various areas of social media and digital marketing from the experts. The list of the speakers that will form an integral part of the event is yet to be released to the public.
Both Gunguluza and Sibanda, who have partnered up to organise the event, expressed immense excitement regarding the approaching conference. “I’m particularly excited to see all these key industry players coming together under one roof,” Sibanda said.
